Condition

On cream wove paper (papier vélin), laid down on cardboard on wood. Margins unevenly trimmed, the left margin straightened compared to the illustration in the catalogue raisonné. Some repaired tears, especially in the centre of the left margin, in the lower right corner. The sheet is somewhat stained in places, browned

Comments

Joop Joosten dates the drawing to 1938-1940, the time when Mondrian lived in London, close to the artist couple Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson. In 1940 he then emigrated to the USA, where the important late paintings were to be created. The sheet offered here dates from before then, but one can already sense the linear system that would later become groundbreaking. Works on paper from this period are very rare, with only about 50 surviving works, including the very well documented drawing offered here.

Auf cremefarbenem Velin, auf Karton auf Holz aufgelegt. Die Ränder sind ungleichmäßig geschnitten, der linke Rand gegenüber der Abbildung im Werkverzeichnis begradigt. Einige reparierte Einrisse, vor allem in der Mitte des linken Randes, in der rechten unteren Ecke. Das Blatt ist stellenweise etwas fleckig, gebräunt

Erläuterungen

Joop Joosten datiert die Zeichnung auf die Jahre 1938-1940, also in die Zeit, als Mondrian in London lebte, in der Nähe des Künstlerpaars Barbara Hepworth und Ben Nicholson. Im Jahr 1940 emigrierte er dann in die USA, wo die wichtigen, späten Gemälde entstehen sollten. Das hier angebotene Blatt datiert von vorher; doch spürt man schon das lineare System, das später bahnbrechend werden würde. Arbeiten auf Papier aus dieser Zeit sind sehr selten, es haben sich nur knapp 50 Werke erhalten, darunter die hier angebotene, sehr gut dokumentierte Zeichnung
