On slightly brownish and wavy Ingres laid paper with traces of an earlier passepartout. A nail hole in the lower right corner. Two further small holes in the centre of the upper margin. Traces of an old mount on the verso. Beautiful sheet in good condition

Comments

Having already explored a historical event in her art with "Ein Weberaufstand", Käthe Kollwitz worked on her second cycle of prints, the seven-part "Bauernkrieg", between 1901 and 1908. In it, the artist dealt with the violent uprising of the peasants against oppression and lawlessness in 1524/1525. For Kollwitz' liberal-socialist environment, the "Allgemeine Geschichte des grossen Bauernkriegs" (General History of the Great Peasant War), written by the historian and theologian Wilhelm Zimmermann, was not about the distant past, but had current relevance; it was about drawing attention to the problems of the proletariat.

As always, there were many intermediate states in the run-up to the print runs: even other topics were realised that were not included in the series. This was also the case with the works for "Inspiration" created in 1904/1905. These are discarded ideas for the third "Bauernkrieg" print, which ultimately found its way into the series as "Beim Dengeln". Behind a peasant woman stands an allegorical male figure who, in the 1904 etching of the same title (Knesebeck 86), symbolises inspiration with its large black wings. Almost like an avenging angel, he whispers the idea of defence into the peasant woman‘s ear, scythe at the ready. An impressively gloomy, almost painterly realisation that clearly demonstrates Kollwitz's political convictions.

Zustand

Auf etwas gebräuntem und leicht gewelltem Ingres-Bütten mit Spuren eines früheren Passepartouts. In der unteren rechten Ecke ein Reissnagelloch. Im oberen Rand mittig zwei weitere kleine Löcher. Rückseitig Spuren einer alten Montierung. Wunderschönes Blatt in gutem Zustand.

Erläuterungen

Nachdem sie mit "Ein Weberaufstand" schon einmal ein historisches Ereignis in ihrer Kunst aufgegriffen hatte, arbeitete Käthe Kollwitz in den Jahren 1901 bis 1908 an ihrem zweiten Druckzyklus, dem siebenteiligen "Bauernkrieg". Die Künstlerin bearbeitete darin den gewaltsamen Aufstand der Bauern gegen die Unterdrückung und Gesetzlosigkeit in den Jahren 1524/1525. Für das liberal-sozialistische Umfeld von Kollwitz bedeutete die vom Historiker und Theologen Wilhelm Zimmermann verfasste Geschichte des "Grossen Deutschen Bauernkrieges" keine ferne Vergangenheit, sondern hatte vielmehr aktuelle Relevanz; es ging darum, auf die Probleme des Proletariats aufmerksam zu machen.

Wie immer entstanden im Vorfeld der Auflagendrucke viele Zwischenzustände: Sogar andere Themen wurden umgesetzt, die dann nicht in die Folge aufgenommen wurden. So auch bei den 1904/1905 entstandenen Arbeiten zu "Inspiration". Es handelt sich um verworfene Bildideen zum dritten Bauernkriegsblatt, das schliesslich als "Beim Dengeln" Eingang in die Serie fand. Hinter einer Bäuerin steht eine männliche, allegorische Gestalt, die auf der 1904 entstandenen Radierung gleichen Titels (Knesebeck 86) durch ihre grossen schwarzen Flügel ikonographisch für die personifizierte Inspiration steht. Fast wie ein Racheengel flüstert er der Bäuerin den Gedanken der Gegenwehr ins Ohr, die Sense griffbereit. Ein eindrücklich düsteres, fast malerisch umgesetztes Blatt, das Kollwitz’ politische Überzeugung klar vor Augen führt.
