For the painting "Portrait of Hermine Gallia", now in the National Gallery in London and dated 1904, Gustav Klimt probably made studies in three different series in 1902/1903. In the first series of studies, Gustav Klimt depicted the model seated, in the second series the lady wears a stole, and in the third an elaborate train - as it was finally realised in the painting

Awarded the honorary title of "Government Councillor" by the Emperor, Moritz Gallia worked successfully as a merchant and made a handsome fortune with his holdings. The Gallia couple were close to numerous cultural figures in Vienna, such as Josef Hoffmann or Carl Moll, or Gustav Klimt, who painted an impressive portrait of Hermine Gallia. He began the picture in 1903 and completed it at the beginning of 1904. The drawing offered here, from the third series of studies, shows his impressive skill in capturing the characteristic features of a person. The drawing with the suggested lace sleeves and the falling stole gives an idea of the wealth of detail that will eventually unfold in the painting. Erläuterungen

Für das sich heute in der National Gallery in London befindliche und 1904 datierte Gemälde «Bildnis Hermine Gallia» entstanden wohl in den Jahren 1902/1903 Studien in drei verschiedenen Reihen. Bei der ersten Studienreihe stellte Gustav Klimt das Modell sitzend dar, bei der zweiten Serie trägt die Dame eine Stola, in der dritten eine aufwendige Schleppe – so, wie es dann schliesslich im Gemälde auch umgesetzt wurde

Vom Kaiser mit dem Ehrentitel "Regierungsrat" ausgezeichnet, arbeitete Moritz Gallia erfolgreich als Kaufmann und machte mit seinen Beteiligungen ein stattliches Vermögen. Das Ehepaar Gallia stand zahlreichen Kulturschaffenden in Wien nahe, etwa Josef Hoffmann oder Carl Moll, oder eben auch Gustav Klimt, der Hermine Gallia eindrücklich porträtierte. Er begann das Bild 1903 und vollendete es Anfang 1904. Die hier angebotene Zeichnung aus der dritten Studienreihe zeigt sein eindrückliches Können, die charakteristischen Züge einer Person einzufangen. Die Zeichnung mit den angedeuteten Spitzenärmeln und der fallenden Stola lässt den sich schliesslich im Gemälde entfaltenden Detailreichtum erahnen.
