Religious themes always occupied an important place in Chagall’s œuvre. For the artist, religion is an important collective term for spirituality, but also for openness and respect towards other people. Thus, his work often incorporates themes that cannot be clearly ascribed to a single religion. In February 1966, he published The Story of the Exodus, printed in Paris by Fernand Mourlot. It is an illustrated text from the London Bible of 1597, its Hebrew quotations taken from the corresponding chapter of the Old Testament. The book is an extraordinary example of Chagall’s distinctive, profound illustrational work. He also made preparatory sketches for the publication, including the one offered here: The Crossing of the Red Sea (cf. the lithograph Mourlot 453). An angel leads the way while the psalm-singing King David accompanies the group. On the opposite bank is a surprise: Christ on the cross in the stylized village square of Vitebsk, and beside him a rabbi with a Torah scroll. Once again, Chagall creates a striking simultaneity between history and story; the lovers in the surging sea symbolize tolerance towards all human beings

Religiöse Themen nehmen seit dem Frühwerk einen wichtigen Platz im Œuvre von Marc Chagall ein. Religion ist für den Künstler ein wichtiger Sammelbegriff für Spiritualität, aber auch für Offenheit und Respekt gegenüber Menschen. So finden sich in seinem Œuvre oft Themen, die sich nicht klar einer einzelnen Religion zuordnen lassen. Im Februar 1966 publizierte er "The Story of the Exodus", von Fernand Mourlot in Paris gedruckt. Es ist die Illustration von Texten aus der Londoner Bibel von 1597, den hebräischen Zitaten aus dem entsprechenden Kapitel im Alten Testament. Das Buch zeugt von Chagalls unverwechselbarer, tiefgründiger Illustrationskunst. Im Zusammenhang mit der Publikation entstanden Vorarbeiten; hier die Durchquerung des Roten Meeres (vgl. dazu die Lithographien Mourlot 453 und 467). Ein Engel weist den Weg, der psalmendichtende König David begleitet die Gruppe. Auf dem anderen Ufer dann die Überraschung: Christus am Kreuz auf dem stilisierten Dorfplatz von Witebsk, daneben ein Rabbiner mit der Thorarolle. Einmal mehr bringt Chagall Geschichte und Geschichten eindrücklich in eine Simultanität, das Liebespaar in den Fluten des Meeres zeugt von der grossen Toleranz gegenüber allen Mitmenschen
