Impeccable casting with beautiful brown patina
This work portrays Louise Schuffenecker, the wife of the artist Émile Schuffenecker. Gauguin met him as early as 1872 in the company of the stockbroker Bertin. Since Émile Schuffenecker had a good feeling for artistic quality and had the corresponding financial means at his disposal, he often bought works by his fellow artists at low prices. Gauguin, who made his home with the family, turned away from Schuffenecker in the course of 1890 because of his selfishness. Gauguin's liaison with Louise Schuffenecker certainly contributed to this. Paul Gauguin still executed the plaster at the beginning of 1890. It was not until 1960 that the bust was cast using the "cire perdue" process in a small edition of just 10 copies at the Claude Valsuani foundry, now run by his son Marcel.
