Commentaires

Schwitters became known on the art scene with his first exhibition participation at Herwarth Walden's gallery "Der Sturm" in Berlin. Involved in the Dada movement, he searched for his own form and developed the term "Merz" for his art in the winter of 1918/1919. From then on, he called all his activities "Merz". In 1919, he joined the IVEKF, the "International Association of Expressionists, Cubists and Futurists", which had been founded by Herwarth Walden and Rudolf Blümner, among others. During this time, he also created his first assemblages and, in addition to his first stamp paintings, a series of Dadaist watercolours, which he numbered consecutively. The present sheet bears the number "9". Even after developing his own abstraction, he continued to create figurative works in a post-impressionist style. A very beautiful work, probably with a crashing captive balloon.

Erläuterungen

Mit seiner ersten Ausstellungsbeteiligung in Herwarth Waldens Galerie "Der Sturm" in Berlin wurde Schwitters in der Kunstszene bekannt. Engagiert in der Dada-Bewegung suchte er nach einer eigenen Form und entwickelte im Winter 1918/1919 den Begriff "Merz" für seine Kunst. Fortan nannte er alle seine Aktivitäten "Merz". 1919 trat er der IVEKF bei, der "Internationalen Vereinigung von Expressionisten, Kubisten und Futuristen", die unter anderem von Herwarth Walden und Rudolf Blümner gegründet worden war. In dieser Zeit entstanden auch erste Assemblagen und neben ersten Stempelbildern eine Serie dadaistischer Aquarelle, die er durchnummerierte. Das vorliegende Blatt trägt die Nummer "9". Auch nach der Entwicklung seiner eigenen Abstraktion schuf er weiterhin gegenständliche Arbeiten im nachimpressionistischen Stil. Eine sehr schöne Arbeit, wohl mit einem abstürzenden Fesselballon.
