Commentaires

Having grown up in the most miserable of circumstances, Adolf Wölfli was admitted to the Waldau psychiatric hospital near Bern in 1895 after several attempts at emergency treatment. The diagnosis was "dementia paranoides" (schizophrenia). On the advice of his doctors, Wölfli wrote his first life story on his admission to Waldau and began to draw in 1899, at the age of 35. He saw himself as a writer, composer and artist. His mission was to explain the organisation of life and the world. By the end of his life, he had created an impressive oeuvre of over 25,000 pages.

The large-format work offered here shows a characteristic, detailed text of 22 lines on the reverse and bears an explanatory title. It is a portrait for Miss Hermina Marti in Obergoldbach, municipality of Lützelflüh.

Erläuterungen

In erbärmlichsten Lebensumständen aufgewachsen, wurde Adolf Wölfli nach mehreren Notzuchtversuchen 1895 in die psychiatrische Heilanstalt Waldau bei Bern eingewiesen. Die Diagnose lautete "Dementia paranoides" (Schizophrenie). Auf Anraten seiner Ärzte verfasste Wölfli bei seinem Eintritt in die Waldau seine erste Lebensgeschichte und begann 1899, im Alter von 35 Jahren, zu zeichnen. Er verstand sich als Schriftsteller, Komponist und Künstler. Seine Mission war es, die Organisation des Lebens und der Welt neu zu erklären. Bis zu seinem Lebensende schuf er ein beeindruckendes Werk von über 25000 Seiten.

Das hier angebotene, grossformatige Blatt zeigt rückseitig einen charakteristischen, ausführlichen Text von 22 Zeilen und trägt einen erklärenden Titel. Es handelt sich um ein Porträt für Fräulein Hermina Marti in Obergoldbach, Gemeinde Lützelflüh.
