Commentaires

As noted in Vallotton's "Livre de raison" under LRZ 530 "21 études paysage faites à Varengeville", the painting belongs to a group of 21 pictures created during Vallotton's stay in Varengeville in 1904. The house depicted here in pink can also be found in a similar form in other paintings from this group (Ducrey 501, 503). Varengeville-sur-Mer is located in Normandy and, with its beach, cliffs and lush vegetation, was a favourite motif and destination for artists such as Claude Monet, Joan Miró and Georges Braque, who is buried there.

Armand Dorville (1875-1941), a French art collector and lawyer, bought the work from Jacques Rodrigues-Henriques, whose mother Gabrielle, Vallotton's wife, was a friend of his. After Dorville's death, the majority of the art collection was sold by his heirs at the auction "Cabinet d'un amateur parisien", Nice, 24 June 1942. The present painting (lot 393) and a few other works were withdrawn by the heirs before the auction and thus remained in family ownership, the present painting until its sale in 2011.

Erläuterungen

Wie in Vallottons "Livre de raison" unter LRZ 530 "21 études paysage faites à Varengeville" vermerkt, gehört das Gemälde zu einer Gruppe von 21 Bildern, die 1904 während Vallottons Aufenthalt in Varengeville entstanden. Das hier in Rosa dargestellte Haus findet sich in ähnlicher Form auch auf anderen Gemälden dieser Gruppe (Ducrey 501, 503). Varengeville-sur-Mer befindet sich in der Normandie und war mit seinem Strand, den Klippen und der üppigen Vegetation ein beliebtes Motiv und Reiseziel für Künstler wie Claude Monet, Joan Miró und Georges Braque, der dort beerdigt ist.

Armand Dorville (1875-1941), französischer Kunstsammler und Anwalt, kaufte das Werk bei Jacques Rodrigues-Henriques, mit dessen Mutter Gabrielle, der Ehefrau Vallottons, er befreundet war. Der grösste Teil der Kunstsammlung wurde nach Dorvilles Tod von den Erben an der Auktion "Cabinet d’un amateur parisien", Nizza, 24. Juni 1942 verkauft. Das vorliegende Gemälde (Los 393) sowie wenige andere Werke wurden von den Erben vor der Auktion zurückgezogen und verblieben somit in Familienbesitz, das vorliegende Gemälde bis zum Verkauf im Jahr 2011.
