Condition

On the original chassis, in the old nailing. With impasto application of colour, with minimal craquelure in places. Slightly rubbed through the frame at the margins. In very good condition and fresh in colour

Commentaires

This portrait of a farmer cutting bread, executed in a pointillist manner, was created under the influence of van Gogh's expressive painting. The intensely coloured composition is the last of three versions (Müller/Radlach 1908.17-19). It depicts Giovanin de Vöja, a small farmer from Villa di Chiavenna. The second version, "Il pane", was purchased by the Basler Kunstverein in 1908. Albert Gessler, a member of the purchasing commission, wrote about the work: "Giovanni Giacometti, also a brightly coloured pointillist, brings "Disciple of Emmaus" to visionary luminosity, but hardly to perfect sculptural form; he then achieves this in a bread eater of immensely strong colour [...]."

Erläuterungen

Das in pointillistischer Manier ausgeführte Bildnis des Bauern beim Brotschneiden entstand unter dem Eindruck der expressiven Malerei van Goghs. Die farbintensive Komposition ist die letzte von drei Fassungen (Müller/Radlach 1908.17-19). Dargestellt ist Giovanin de Vöja, ein aus Villa di Chiavenna stammender Kleinbauer. Die zweite Fassung "Il pane" wurde 1908 vom Basler Kunstverein angekauft. Albert Gessler, Mitglied der Ankaufskommission, schrieb über das Werk: "Giovanni Giacometti, ebenfalls hell malender Pointillist, bringt "Jünger von Emmaus" zu visionärer Leuchtkraft, aber kaum zu vollendet plastischer Gestaltung; diese erreicht er dann in einem farbig ungemein starken Brotesser […]."
