Esquisse pour "Les Boulevards" ou "Paris fantastique" is a mysterious painting by Marc Chagall that masterfully reveals the simultaneous narrative strands that make his oeuvre so unique. The artist weaves several layers of lived and collective history into an impressive whole. The paintings, which Apollinaire aptly described as "surnaturel", bear witness to Chagall's incredibly multi-layered and complex themes. His specially developed iconography elevates each picture to a new contextual level. In most of his works, this creates narrative arcs that extend from his childhood to the present day. The small town of Vitebsk, the origin of his art, is also prominently embedded in the lower right of the painting on offer here. The town's Orthodox church or synagogue looms stylised above the rooftops. Paris, the centre of the artist's life after 1923, is always located by means of buildings; here the Eiffel Tower is embedded in the centre of the motif. The artist often depicts himself zoomorphically, here probably as a crowned cockerel whose anthropomorphic arms literally embrace the composition. In one hand he holds a bouquet of flowers, symbolising creativity, in the other the book of life. The cockerel stands for family and tranquillity, while the "mystical animal" watches over him from the top right, completing a composition that can be read as an autobiographical homage to the city of Paris. It is an independent preparatory work for the large-format painting of the same name from the same year, which was then executed in shades of blue. The work offered here is an exemplary demonstration of how the master slowly approached a motif with several elaborate versions.

Esquisse pour "Les Boulevards" ou "Paris fantastique" ist ein geheimnisvolles Gemälde von Marc Chagall, das die simultanen Narrationsstränge, die sein Œuvre so einzigartig machen, meisterhaft aufzeigt. Der Künstler verwebt mehrere Ebenen aus gelebter und kollektiver Geschichte zu einem eindrücklichen Gesamten. Die Gemälde, die Apollinaire treffend als "surnaturel" bezeichnete, zeugen von Chagalls unglaublich vielschichtigen und komplexen Themen. Seine eigens entwickelte Ikonographie hebt jedes Bild auf eine neue kontextuelle Ebene. In den meisten Werken entstehen so Narrationsbögen, die von seiner Kindheit bis in die Gegenwart reichen. Das Städtchen Witebsk als Ursprung seiner Kunst ist auch im hier angebotenen Gemälde prominent am rechten unteren Bildrand eingebettet. Über den Dächern ragt stilisiert die orthodoxe Kirche oder die Synagoge der Stadt hervor. Paris, Lebensmittelpunkt des Künstlers nach 1923, wird immer mittels Gebäuden verortet; hier wird der Eiffelturm denn auch zentral ins Motiv eingebettet. Oft stellt sich der Künstler selbst zoomorph dar, hier wohl als gekrönter Hahn, dessen anthropomorphe Arme die Komposition förmlich umfassen. In der einen Hand hält er einen für die Kreativität stehenden Blumenstrauss, in der anderen das Buch des Lebens. Der Hahn steht für die Familie, die Ruhe, oben rechts wacht das "mystische Tier" – so schliesst sich die autobiographisch als Hommage an die Stadt Paris zu lesende Komposition. Es handelt sich um eine eigenständige Vorarbeit für das gleichnamige, grossformatige Gemälde aus demselben Jahr, das dann eher in Blautönen umgesetzt wurde. Die hier angebotene Arbeit zeigt mustergültig, wie sich der Meister mit mehreren ausgearbeiteten Versionen langsam an ein Motiv herantastete.
