Condition

On thin wove paper (papier vélin). With minimal handling creases and with lightstruck. At the back side with traces of an old mounting. Colour fresh and clean in condition

Commentaires

This gouache is an unusual view of the lake landscape of the Upper Engadine from Aela above Maloja. In the foreground is the Silsersee with the Sasc da Corn, followed by the Silvaplanersee and the Lej da Champfèr. A watercolour with the same view is reproduced on a coloured plate in the book by Helena Sokolow, Engadiner Legenden, Chur 1983. Giacometti was a master of watercolour, who was particularly fond of throwing the liquid paint onto the paper and who knew how to exploit the transparency of the colours for the benefit of the strongest colour contrasts. Giacometti usually found the subjects for his watercolours and gouaches on his travels or hikes in his surroundings, as in this work on a hill above Maloja. The unusual size of the present work suggests that it was probably created around 1920 as a poster design

Erläuterungen

Die vorliegende Gouache ist eine ungewöhnliche Ansicht der Seenlandschaft des Oberengadins von Aela oberhalb von Maloja aus. Im Vordergrund ist der Silsersee mit dem Sasc da Corn, gefolgt vom Silvaplanersee und dem Lej da Champfèr zu sehen. Ein Aquarell mit derselben Ansicht ist auf einer farbigen Tafel im Buch von Helena Sokolow, Engadiner Legenden, Chur 1983, reproduziert. Giacometti war ein Meister des Aquarells, dem das rasche Hinwerfen der flüssigen Malmaterie auf das Papier besonders zusagte, und der die Transparenz der Farben zu Gunsten stärkster farbiger Kontraste auszunützen wusste. Die Sujets seiner Aquarelle und Gouachen fand Giacometti meist auf seinen Reisen oder Wanderungen in seiner Umgebung, wie in diesem Werk auf einer Anhöhe oberhalb Malojas. Die aussergewöhnliche Grösse des vorliegenden Werkes lässt darauf schliessen, dass die Arbeit um 1920 wohl als Plakatentwurf entstanden ist
