Commentaires

A total of 5 plasters (one destroyed), 2 marble versions and 6 bronze casts are known of this sculpture. This is the last plaster in private ownership. These works were actually so-called working plasters, which were not produced to enter the art market as works of art. However, this did not prevent Arp and his wife from giving plaster figures as gifts in individual cases. In the early 1940s, Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp had to flee from Paris to the small town of Grasse in the south of France to escape the approaching occupying troops. Only after their attempt to emigrate to the USA together failed did they travel on to Switzerland in 1942. In Grasse, Hans Arp worked with large plaster blocks and created some sculptures. It seems that he was able to work according to a plan even without a design. Among other things, he created three sculptural works with the term "Mittelmeer" in the title

Erläuterungen

Von dieser Skulptur sind gesamthaft 5 Gipse (eine zerstört) bekannt, 2 Marmorversionen und 6 Bronzegüsse. Es handelt sich um den letzten Gips in Privatbesitz. Diese Werke waren eigentlich sogenannte Arbeitsgipse, die nicht produziert wurden, um als Kunstwerke in den Kunstmarkt zu gelangen. Das hinderte Arp und seine Ehefrau in Einzelfällen jedoch nicht, Gipsfiguren zu verschenken. Anfang der 1940er Jahre mussten Hans Arp und Sophie Taeuber-Arp vor den anrückenden Besatzertruppen von Paris aus zunächst in das südfranzösische Städtchen Grasse fliehen. Erst nachdem der Versuch einer gemeinsamen Emigration in die USA scheiterte, reisten sie 1942 weiter in die Schweiz. In Grasse arbeitete Hans Arp mit grossen Gipsblöcken und schuf einige Skulpturen. Es scheint, als ob er auch ohne Entwurf nach einem Plan arbeiten konnte. So entstanden unter anderem drei plastische Werke mit dem Begriff "Mittelmeer" im Titel
