Condition

On strong paper over canvas. On the original stretcher, in the old nailing. Single nails missing, at the stretcher with small tears in the paper at the sides in places. In very good condition and fresh in colour

Commentaires

In this work, Giacometti did not make a model to be portrayed the actual subject, but the chair on which the persons portrayed were sitting. It is a simple bistro chair, a so-called bentwood chair. The technique of bentwood furniture was developed in the middle of the 19th century and was made famous above all by the Viennese furniture company "Thonet". One usually speaks of "Thonet chairs"

As usual, Giacometti seeks the ideal line in this work. For example, the artist repeats the round shape of the seat of the chair on the left in the picture, and he also repeats the shape of the backrest

Giacometti had already used the solid sheet of paper in the present work before it was probably mounted on the stretcher frame over the canvas. If you look closely at the painting, you can see another representation under the present one. It is a figure in profile striding to the right, executed in red paint, similar to a drawing from 1947 now in the Fondation Alberto and Annette Giacometti in Paris

Auf festem Papier über Leinwand. Auf dem originalen Chassis, in der alten Nagelung. Einzelne Nägel fehlen, am Keilrahmen seitlich stellenweise mit kleinen Einrissen im Papier. In sehr guter und farbfrischer Erhaltung

Erläuterungen

In diesem Werk machte Giacometti nicht ein zu porträtierendes Modell zum eigentlichen Thema, sondern den Stuhl, auf dem die dargestellten Personen sassen. Es ist ein einfacher Bistrostuhl, ein sogenannter Bugholzstuhl. Die Technik der Bugholzmöbel wurde Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts entwickelt und wurde vor allem durch die Wiener Möbelfirma „Thonet" berühmt gemacht. Man spricht denn meist auch von "Thonet-Stühlen“

Wie gewohnt sucht Giacometti in diesem Werk die Ideallinie. So führt der Künstler die runde Form der Stuhlsitzfläche links im Bild mehrfach aus, auch die Form der Rückenlehne nimmt er nochmals auf

Das feste Papierblatt des vorliegenden Werkes, bevor es wohl über die Leinwand auf den Keilrahmen montiert wurde, hat Giacometti schon einmal verwendet. Betrachtet man das Gemälde genau, so erkennt man unter der jetzigen Darstellung eine weitere. Es ist eine, in roter Farbe ausgeführte, nach rechts schreitende Figur im Profil, ähnlich einer heute in der Fondation Alberto und Annette Giacometti in Paris befindlichen Zeichnung aus dem Jahre 1947
