Johannes Itten wrote in the diary entry of autumn 1928 about the transformation from three- to two-dimensionality on the picture surface: "The actual spatial problem of painting consists in this: we must understand how to arrange the forms and colours in the picture in such a way that not only the horizontal, vertical and circular movement, but also the diagonal movement, which is the actual movement of depth, are brought into a two-dimensional equilibrium, so that the power of depth creates the illusion of the natural effect of the spatial picture and yet the effective forms of the picture are flat. I must therefore understand how to transform the three-dimensional effective form and yet allow the three-dimensionality of the form of reality in the picture to develop its power."

Erläuterungen

Über die Umsetzung von der Drei- in die Zweidimensionalität auf der Bildfläche schrieb Johannes Itten im Tagebucheintrag vom Herbst 1928: "Das eigentliche Raumproblem der Malerei besteht darin: Wir müssen verstehen, die Formen und Farben im Bilde so anzuordnen, dass nicht nur die horizontale, die vertikale und die zirkuläre Bewegung, sondern auch die diagonale Bewegung, welche die eigentliche Tiefenbewegung ist, in ein flächiges Gleichgewicht gebracht werden, so dass die Kraft der Tiefe die Illusion der Naturwirkung des räumlichen Bildes erzeugt und doch die Wirkungsformen des Bildes flach sind. Ich muss also verstehen, die dreidimensionale Wirkungsform zu verwandeln und doch die Dreidimensionalität der Wirklichkeitsform im Bild zu ihrer Kraftentfaltung kommen zu lassen."
