On thin, beige wove paper (papier vélin), fresh in colours and clean in condition. Old mounted on strong wove paper (papier vélin), presumably by the artist, certainly by the Galerie Kahnweiler in Paris before 1914. The upper right corner with a weak crease, minimally browned

Commentaires

Jugglers and circus life occupied Picasso from 1905 onwards; they were part of his recurring repertoire in the "Pink Period". Visits to the legendary "Circus Medrano" at the foot of Montmartre will have provided many motifs. His exploration of the subject culminated in the large-format painting "Les Saltimbanques", now in the National Gallery in Washington, as well as in the important 15-part series of prints of the same name. He also produced numerous drawings, watercolours and oil studies.

The watercolour offered here, also titled "Arlequin et jeune fille - Bouffon et jeune fille", shows a corpulent clown who also appears in the large oil painting and in one of the etchings. In a red costume with a jester's cap, he always stands or sits at the centre of the action. Unlike in other known preparatory works, in which a juggler boy sits next to him, in the charming paper work offered here there is a girl who, with a basket and a bowl at her feet, probably invites the onlookers to make a donation. A very beautifully executed, early watercolour painting

Auf dünnem, beigem Velin, farbfrisch und sauber in der Erhaltung. Alt auf festes Velin aufgezogen, vermutlich vom Künstler, sicherlich von der Galerie Kahnweiler in Paris vor 1914. Die obere rechte Ecke mit schwacher Knickfalte, minimal gebräunt

Erläuterungen

Gaukler und das Zirkusleben beschäftigten Picasso von 1905 an; sie gehörten zu seinem immer wieder vorkommenden Repertoire in der "Rosa Periode". Besuche im legendären "Zirkus Medrano" am Fuss des Montmartre werden viele Motive geliefert haben. Die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema gipfelte im grossformatigen Gemälde "Les Saltimbanques", das sich heute in der National Gallery in Washington befindet, sowie in der wichtigen, 15-teiligen Graphikfolge desselben Namens. Es entstanden zudem zahlreiche Zeichnungen, Aquarelle und Ölstudien

Das hier angebotene Aquarell, auch betitelt mit "Arlequin et jeune fille - Bouffon et jeune fille", zeigt einen korpulenten Clown, der sich auch im grossen Ölgemälde und auf einer der Radierungen wiederfindet. In rotem Kostüm mit Narrenkappe steht oder sitzt er stets im Mittelpunkt des Geschehens. Anders, als auf anderen bekannten Vorarbeiten, auf denen ein Gauklerjunge neben ihm sitzt, findet sich auf der hier angebotenen reizvollen Papierarbeit ein Mädchen, das mit einem Körbchen und einer Schale zu seinen Füssen wohl die Zuschauenden zu einer Spende einlädt. Ein sehr schön ausformuliertes, frühes Aquarell
