Commentaires

This impressive winter landscape formerly belonged to Gustav Eisenmann-Miller, the brother-in-law of Amiet's Solothurn collector and patron, Oscar Miller. In 1908, Amiet painted the present work as a replica for the Winter Landscape of 1902. The first version showed major damage shortly after completion, so the work was returned to Amiet by Eisenmann for restoration. As the damage was too great and Miller, however, regarded the composition of the Winter Landscape as an eminently artistic achievement, Amiet decided to make a second version of the work and kept the first work in his studio

The present undated painting from 1908 differs only minimally from the original: Amiet added another small bare tree in the middle ground, thus increasing the mightiness of the snowy landscape. The almost monochrome composition of the picture with the horizon line far above allows the snowy expanse with the curving hills to unfold across the picture. The atmospheric and tranquil winter landscape with its reduced colour palette of ochre and pink, the fine gradations from off-white to light to dark blue, is of great luminosity

Erläuterungen

Die eindrucksvolle Winterlandschaft stammt ehemals aus dem Besitz von Gustav Eisenmann-Miller, dem Schwager des Solothurner Sammlers und Mäzens Amiets, Oscar Miller. 1908 malte Amiet das vorliegende Werk als Replik für die Winterlandschaft von 1902. Die erste Version wies kurz nach der Fertigstellung grössere Schäden auf, so dass das Werk von Eisenmann zur Restaurierung an Amiet zurückging. Da die Schäden zu gross waren und Miller aber die Komposition der Winterlandschaft als eine eminent künstlerische Leistung betrachtete, entschloss sich Amiet für eine zweite Fassung des Werkes und behielt das erste Werk in seinem Atelier zurück

Das vorliegende, undatierte Gemälde von 1908 unterscheidet sich nur minim vom ursprünglichen: So fügte Amiet im Mittelgrund zusätzlich ein weiteres kleines kahles Bäumchen hinzu und steigert damit die Mächtigkeit der Schneelandschaft. Die beinahe monochrome Bildkomposition mit der weit oben gelegenen Horizontlinie lässt die Schneefläche mit den geschwungenen Hügeln über das Bild entfalten. Die stimmungsvolle und ruhige Winterlandschaft mit ihrer reduzierten Farbpalette in Ocker und Rosa, den feinen Abstufungen von gebrochenem Weiss über Hell- bis Dunkelblau, ist von grosser Leuchtkraft
