William Blake was fascinated by the subject of "Job" (the Book of Job in the Bible, placed before the Psalms in the Old Testament) from an early age, with a first drawing dating from 1793. At the suggestion of his friend John Linnell, who was himself a painter and publisher, a series of watercolours was created after 1820, which were reproduced as graphic plates in the present book edition. In the first edition, dated "March 1826" in the publication notice, John Linnell appeared as co-publisher. A second edition appeared in 1874 without the designation "Proof" on the individual plates. In 1919, all plates passed into the possession of the Print Department of the British Museum. Apart from the first edition of 1826 and the second of 1874, there are no further editions.

With their unusual intensity and expressive power, the illustrations for the "Book of Job" achieved the highest perfection of Blake's creative genius and technical mastery. Laurence Binyon even describes the series as the pinnacle of original engraving since Dürer and Mantegna (cf. L. Binyon, The Engravings of William Blake [...], In: The Print Collector's Quarterly 1917, p. 319).

Complete and as the earliest possible edition, also in fine overall quality, of great rarity.

Erläuterungen

William Blake war schon in jungen Jahren vom Thema "Job" (das Buch Hiob in der Bibel, platziert vor den Psalmen im Alten Testament) fasziniert, eine erste Zeichnung stammt aus dem Jahr 1793. Auf Anregung seines Freundes John Linnell, der selbst Maler und Verleger war, entstand nach 1820 eine Reihe von Aquarellen, die in der vorliegenden Buchausgabe als Grafikblätter umgesetzt wurden. In der Erstausgabe, die auf der Publikationsanzeige mit "March 1826" datiert war, trat John Linnell als Mitverleger auf. Eine zweite Ausgabe erschien 1874 ohne die Bezeichnung "Proof" auf den einzelnen Blättern. 1919 gingen alle Platten in den Besitz des Print Departments des British Museum über. Ausser der ersten Auflage von 1826 und der zweiten von 1874 gibt es keine weiteren Auflagen.

Mit ihrer ungewöhnlichen Intensität und Ausdruckskraft erreichten die Illustrationen zum "Book of Job" die höchste Vollendung von Blakes schöpferischer Genialität und technischer Meisterschaft. Laurence Binyon bezeichnet die Folge sogar als Höhepunkt auf dem Gebiet des Originalstiches seit Dürer und Mantegna (vgl. L. Binyon, The Engravings of William Blake [...], in: The Print Collector's Quarterly 1917, S. 319).

Komplett und als frühest mögliche Ausgabe, dazu in vorzüglicher Gesamtqualität, von grosser Seltenheit.
