The effect of the gaslight on the singer's face, body, and dress creates a tense atmosphere and is an essential artistic component of this scene from Parisian nightlife. Degas revolutionized art through his depictions of stage performers, ballet dancers, and singers, often shifting the focus from the glamorous stage to everyday life behind the scenes—the exhausting rehearsals and the tired protagonists. With "Une chanteuse", Degas succeeds in capturing a fleeting moment in an impressionistic and almost magical way.

Erläuterungen

Der Effekt des Gaslichts auf Gesicht, Körper und Kleid der Sängerin erzeugt eine spannungsvolle Atmosphäre und ist ein wesentlicher künstlerischer Bestandteil dieser Szene aus dem Pariser Nachtleben. Degas revolutionierte die Kunst durch seine Darstellung von Bühnenkünstlerinnen, Balletttänzerinnen und Sängerinnen, wobei er den Fokus oftmals von der glanzvollen Bühne auf den Alltag hinter den Kulissen - die anstrengenden Proben und die müden Protagonistinnen - legte. Mit "Une chanteuse" gelingt es Degas, einen vergänglichen Moment impressionistisch und fast schon magisch festzuhalten.
