    Condition

Minimal losses at the sheet edges. Outstanding, deep black impression. In excellent condition

    Comments

The impressive lithograph shows the 32-year-old Edvard Munch in a frontal view, his gaunt face set against a deep black background. Munch combines lithographic ink for the broad, dark areas with lithographic chalk for the finest modeling of the head, and uses the scraper where the contrasts need to be softened. At the lower edge of the image, a skeletal arm is visible.

The second state offered here, with a completely black background lightened only in places, the inscription at the top, and the bone arm at the lower edge, is the earliest and most sought-after of the four known versions. The first two states were produced in 1895 in Berlin and printed there in a small edition by Lassally. Of the first state, only the unique impression in Oslo is known. In the third and fourth states, the stone was transferred to another stone, the inscription at the top and the bone arm at the bottom were covered, and it was again printed in a small edition, this time by Nielsen in Oslo.

The self-portrait with skeletal arm is Munch's first graphic self-portrait and was shown in the year of its creation at his first major solo exhibition at the Blomqvist Gallery in Kristiania (now Oslo). Together with "The Scream" and "Madonna" from the same year, it documents Munch's unparalleled mastery of lithography in all its facets.

    Zustand

Minime Fehlstellen an den Blatträndern. Prachtvoller, tiefschwarzer Druck. In ausgezeichneter Erhaltung
