Condition

The paper slightly browned, with discolourations. Occasional small spots, traces of old mounting on the reverse. The lower left corner with a crease. In fine condition

Comments

The theme "The Lonely Ones" (a couple on the beach seen from behind) first occupied Munch in 1891. The oil painting created at that time is now lost, but is documented by photographs from 1892 and 1893. In 1894, the present sheet was created, in reverse compared to the painting, and in 1899 it was finally realized as a woodcut. The print was published as the third sheet in the portfolio "Edvard Munch. Acht Radierungen" by Meier-Graefe in 1895, in editions of 10 on Japan paper and 55 on heavy wove paper. The present sheet shows slight differences at the lower margin compared to the edition. It is probably a trial proof by Angerer in preparation for the edition.

Das Papier minim gebräunt, mit Verfärbungen. Vereinzelte Fleckchen, rückseitig Spuren alter Montierungen. Die linke untere Ecke mit Knick. In schöner Erhaltung

Erläuterungen

Das Thema "Die Einsamen" (ein Paar am Strand in Rückenansicht) beschäftigte Munch erstmals 1891. Das damals entstandene Ölgemälde ist heute verschollen, jedoch durch Fotografien der Jahre 1892 und 1893 belegt. 1894 entstand das vorliegende Blatt, gegenüber dem Gemälde seitenverkehrt, und 1899 erfolgte schliesslich die Umsetzung in Holzschnitt. Die Grafik wurde als drittes Blatt in der Mappe "Edvard Munch. Acht Radierungen" von Meier-Graefe 1895 in den Auflagen 10 auf Japan und 55 auf festem Velin publiziert. Das vorliegende Blatt weist gegenüber der Auflage im unteren Rand leichte Abweichungen auf. Es handelt sich wohl um einen Probedruck von Angerer im Hinblick auf die Auflage.
