On the original stretcher, in the old nailing. In impeccable condition
The present work was created in the Paris studio at 14 Rue Tiphaine and shows a characteristic composition from the Paris period of the 1950s. Sam Francis covers the picture surface almost entirely with a dense, vibrant structure of color that recalls lush vegetation or an abstract thicket. Various shades of green dominate the composition—from deep pine green to bright emerald tones and lighter yellow-green nuances—while intense yellows shine through in the upper area of the painting and in the spaces between.
Francis's spontaneous, gestural brushwork creates a dynamic fabric of overlapping color forms, with individual layers interpenetrating and complex chromatic interactions emerging. The composition has no clear hierarchy, but treats the entire surface as an equivalent structure of pulsating color energy. Individual white and blue accents provide additional points of light.
This work was created during Francis's formative time in Paris, where he was in close contact with European representatives of Informel and Tachisme. The composition shows clear influences of Abstract Expressionism, combined with a specifically European sensitivity to color and light. The all-over structure and intense coloration characterize Francis's early creative phase, before he moved on to his later compositions, which focused more on empty spaces.

In tadelloser Erhaltung
