Auction Galerie Kornfeld, Bern, 10 June 2009, lot 86
Old collected volume, which, however, has been newly bound in a modern half-morocco binding. All sheets mounted on hinges with centre fold. Overall in nice condition, partly with slight, minimally disturbing foxing. All views with wide paper margins
Piranesi continuously created views of the Eternal City between his arrival in Rome in 1740 and his death in 1778, focusing on Baroque Rome. The complete series, produced between 1745 and 1778, comprises a total of 135 sheets, including 2 sheets by Francesco Piranesi. The views were sold to travelers, who could select according to their taste and also determine the number of sheets. Although based on the real appearance of the buildings, Piranesi succeeded in monumentalizing them, making people appear small in comparison. Piranesi's large-format views of Rome represent a high point in the history of printmaking.
36 Sheets in impressions of the first state, 2 sheets in the second state and, in this form, of the greatest rarity. Numerous sheets with watermark "Lilie in Kreis", Hind watermark 1, as desired for early impressions.

The fifteen lots 3075-3089 offer a representative cross-section of the Italian veduta genre. The first realistic views of landscapes and cities appeared in art as early as 1500. However, the genre experienced its heyday in Italy at the end of the 17th and during the 18th century. International tourism to Italy provided a market that was served primarily by printed sheets. The etchings of Antonio Canaletto and Giovanni Battista Piranesi are, of course, the first to be mentioned here. Canaletto's nephew Bernardo Bellotto established the concept of highly realistic cityscapes north of the Alps, while Piranesi combined topographical motifs with the architectural inventions of the ‘Carceri’.
Chronologically, in the selection offered here, the series of important buildings and fountains in Rome, published by the Roman publisher Rossi as early as the 17th century and engraved by Falda, Specchi, and Venturini, mark the beginning. The chronological final chord is formed by Luigi Rossini’s extensive cycle of views of Rome, which continues Piranesi’s major project „Vedute di Roma“ into the 19th century.
