    Condition

A magnificent, deep-black impression of Rembrandt’s graphic masterpiece. Despite the extremely strong inking of the plate, even the darkest areas remain clearly legible. Thanks to the carefully wiped highlights, the composition as a whole maintains a perfect balance between light and shadow. The sheet with a narrow margin all around. Slightly pale foxing, but this is mostly only visible on the reverse. The sheet is completely untreated, which has preserved the velvety surface of the drypoint in its entirety. Sought after and rare in this printing quality and condition

    Comments

The only graphic work executed in drypoint, "Die drei Kreuze", rivals painting in ambition and format. Rembrandt reworked the plate after completion of the third state with a radicality unparalleled in the entire history of printmaking. The first three states show a Calvary, where many figures are bathed in light and can be identified. As the drypoint quickly wore down, Rembrandt fundamentally altered the composition in the fourth state, which followed the previous state immediately in time. This surprising circumstance – previously, a longer interval had always been assumed due to the distinctly changed stylistic appearance – could be proven by recent research based on the watermarks of the papers. Rembrandt largely polished down the plate in order to rework it. Only the three crosses themselves, with Jesus and the thief to his right, were preserved. Strong hatching in the later state plunges the entire hill largely into deep darkness. Also striking is the addition of a rider, referring to the medal of Antonio Pisanello, which shows the equestrian portrait of Gian Francesco Gonzaga.

Rembrandt's "Drei Kreuze" is a daring technical masterpiece, rightly considered a milestone in the history of printmaking and, beyond that, in the history of Western art as a whole.

    Zustand
