Auction Galerie Kornfeld, Bern, 16 June 2017, lot 136
Outstanding impression in excellent condition. The plate mark is visible all around
The sheet belongs to a group of six almost equally sized etchings by Rembrandt on the theme of the youth of Jesus. The New Testament does not report extensively on the circumcision; according to the regulations, it took place eight days after birth, during which the newborn child was given the name Jesus. The location is not specified. In pictorial tradition, the event usually takes place in the temple, where a high priest performs the circumcision. However, since Jewish women were only allowed to enter the synagogue again 33 days after birth, pictorial scenes of the circumcision are also found in the stable, as here with Rembrandt. In this way, the mother could also be present at the event. Mary prays while Joseph holds the child. The center of the composition is bathed in bright light, while the right part of the image is darkened. The diagonal hatching is reminiscent of the IVth state of the "Drei Kreuze"

Auktion Galerie Kornfeld, Bern, 16. Juni 2017, Los 136
Hervorragender Druck in ganz ausgezeichneter Erhaltung.
