Etching on laid paper
9.8x14.6 cm, sheet size
The New Hollstein (Hinterding/Rutgers) 281
White/Boon 64
Excellent impression with wonderfully warm plate tone. Apart from a small, barely noticeable damage in the upper right corner (small horizontal cut?), in fine condition throughout. With a narrow margin all around
The present etching is one of three illustrations that Rembrandt created of this Bible passage (Luke 2:41–47; the other two are White/Boon 65, see also lots 3063 and 3064). This one belongs to a group of scenes of equal format from the youth of Jesus. Seated among the scribes, the twelve-year-old, as described in the Bible, engages in lively discussion with the scribes in the temple. In the background, listeners are standing. Some of them look down from a slightly raised gallery and listen to the words of Jesus. Scholars have more or less convincingly attempted to identify individual figures; for example, it has been suggested that the twelve-year-old Jesus is a portrait of Rembrandt's son Titus, who was twelve years old in 1654.

Radierung auf Bütten

The New Hollstein (Hinterding/Rutgers) 281
White/Boon 64
