Comments

As reported in the Gospel, Jesus drives the merchants out of the temple with great fury, which they have turned into a marketplace (John 2: 13-16). One of several sources of inspiration for Rembrandt was the corresponding scene from Dürer's "Kleiner Holzschnittpassion", in which Jesus is shown similarly agitated. Rembrandt's etching is full of Baroque dynamism, which contrasts with the group of high priests at the upper right. The clergy remain still and observe the scene without any visible reaction. Rembrandt's interpretation of the biblical story receives a special accent in that he places the halo not around Jesus' head, but around his punishing hand.

Erläuterungen

Wie im Evangelium berichtet, treibt Jesus die Händler mit grossem Furor aus dem Tempel, den sie in eine Markthalle verwandelt haben (Johannes 2, 13-16). Als eine von mehreren Inspirationsquellen diente Rembrandt die entsprechende Szene aus Dürers "Kleiner Holzschnittpassion", in der Jesus ähnlich aufgebracht gezeigt wird. Rembrandts Radierung ist voller barocker Dynamik, die mit der Gruppe der Hohepriester oben rechts kontrastiert. Die Geistlichen verharren still und betrachten die Szene ohne erkennbare Regung. Rembrandts Interpretation der biblischen Geschichte erhält einen besonderen Akzent dadurch, dass er den Strahlenkranz nicht um das Haupt Jesu, sondern um dessen strafende Hand anordnet.
