    Comments

As described in the Gospel of Matthew, Rembrandt shows Jesus looking at the coin handed to him in the temple by a group of Pharisees (22: 15-22). According to Jesus, the portrait of the emperor stamped on it shows that it belongs to the emperor. As if to confirm the correctness of his statement, he has raised his right hand to heaven. In addition to the splendid garments of the clergy, it is especially the ornately curved chair of the high priest in the foreground through which the artist succeeds in bringing the Baroque era to life even in such a small picture.
