    Comments

The etching belongs to a group of depictions of beggars, vagabonds, and street vendors that Rembrandt created at the beginning of his career between 1628 and 1631. Without doubt, he was inspired by the 25 etched beggar depictions "Les Geux" by Jacques Callot, which were published in Nancy in 1622. Common features include the neutral background and the striking lighting of the figures with corresponding shadow effects. Unlike Callot, Rembrandt's works are individual prints that do not form a series but can each stand alone. The popularity of the theme is evidenced by further etched series of beggars, such as those by Johann von Vliet (Hollstein 73-82).

This sheet was probably still created in Leiden, before the artist moved to Amsterdam in 1631.
