Alexander Farnese of Parma and Piacenza (1545-1692) was governor of the Habsburg Netherlands from 1578 until his death. As the most important general of Philip II in the war against the independence efforts of the Netherlands, Muller portrayed him in a finely decorated suit of armor. His position is indicated not only by the Order of the Golden Fleece but also by his crowned coat of arms beside him on a neutral background.
