Auction Galerie Kornfeld, Bern, 24 June 1992, lot 20

    Condition

Superb and also strikingly well-preserved impression, especially for a sheet from the early days of copper engraving. Even the finest gradations, for example in the faces of the apostles, print precisely and clearly, which also brings out the plasticity of the garments. Completely untouched

    Comments

The sheet is, in all probability, a unique example. Lehrs, who mentioned only two others including this one, already doubted the existence of the example he listed for the Durazzo Collection. The third, formerly in the possession of the Earls of Northwick (Lugt 2790a) and now in the British Museum, is, as Lehrs corrected in volume 9 of his "Kritischen Kataloges" published in 1934, merely a reciprocal copy by van Meckenem (Lehrs 236).

The description in the 1954 catalogue by Gutekunst and Klipstein was accordingly rhapsodic, calling the sheet "eine der Perlen der deutschen Grabstichelkunst" The depiction belongs to a series of sheets, each pair showing the twelve apostles. Since one of the engravings ("Philippus und Jacobus Minor" Lehrs 96) is dated 1467, the series can definitely be assigned to the master's late work and thus to his most mature pieces. For Max Geisberg, "diese Miniaturmeisterwerke zu dem Schönsten, was wir vom Meister ES kennen"

As Lehrs already noted, the series of apostles also demonstrates the role of early printmaking in the dissemination of pictorial and motif ideas. Some of the apostle figures from the choir stalls of the Abbey of Hauterive (Fribourg), created between 1472 and 1486, are freely copied after the engravings by Master ES.

    Zustand
