    Comments

Silenus, a hybrid creature of man and beast, not unlike the satyrs, was according to ancient mythology the teacher and later companion of the god of wine. Rubens, who frequently painted bacchic themes, worked closely for a short period between 1631 and 1635 with the blockcutter Jegher in order to transfer his pictorial inventions into the medium of woodcut with his help. The present depiction shows a variant of the central group of the Rubens painting that is now in the Alte Pinakothek Munich (inv. no. 319).

Nr. 319).
