Comments

In his portrait of the French king, Goltzius focuses entirely on the monarch’s face with its striking features. The two orders worn on chains on his chest indicate his social status. As king, he was sovereign of the Order of St. Michael, founded by Louis XI in 1469, and of the Order of the Holy Spirit, founded by Henry III in 1578.

Erläuterungen

Goltzius konzentriert sich in seinem Porträt des französischen Königs ganz auf das Gesicht des Monarchen mit seinen markanten Zügen. Auf seine gesellschaftliche Stellung weisen die beiden an Ketten getragenen Orden auf seiner Brust hin. Als König war er Souverän des 1469 von Ludwig XI. gestifteten St.-Michaels-Ordens und des 1578 von Heinrich III. gestifteten Heilig-Geist-Ordens.
