    Comments

The sheet was printed by the Nuremberg illuminator Hans Guldenmundt and sold "bey den Fleisch Pencken". This sheet too is missing from Geisberg’s compendium and was only included with a sub-number in the reprint by Walter Strauss, thanks to the illustration in the catalogue by Gutekunst and Klipstein from 1958. Another known example is not coloured.

The four sheets offered here (lots 3040-3043) come from the collection of the former Ducal Museum in Gotha (now Friedenstein Foundation Gotha). To this day, the museum holds a rich collection of German broadsheets from the Reformation period, which has been extensively published (most recently: Bernd Schäfer/Ulrike Eydinger/Matthias Rekow, Fliegende Blätter. Die Sammlung der Einblattholzschnitte des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts der Stiftung Schloss Friedenstein Gotha, 2 vols., Stuttgart 2016).

Although a significant part of the general, comprehensively encyclopedic Gotha print collection had already been auctioned at C.G. Boerner in Leipzig during the interwar years, further sales occurred during the turmoil of the postwar years. Initiated by the museum management in the late 1940s, graphics as well as other artworks were deaccessioned and sold to the art dealer Kurt Müller, owner of the Erfurt firm Colussi & Co. He consigned them between 1955 and 1960 to our Bern auctions, although there had already been isolated sales at Weinmüller in Munich before that, and even after 1960 further sheets were offered in Bern (see also the forthcoming article by Armin Kunz, "Die graphische Sammlung als Restbestand. Die Druckgraphik-Verkäufe aus Gothaer Beständen im 20. Jahrhundert", in: Das illustrierte Flugblatt im 16. Jahrhundert. Protestantische Profilbildung am Beispiel der Gothaer Sammlung, ed. By Ulrike Eydinger, Christopher Spehr and Kathrin Paasch, Göttingen 2025).

The four lot numbers were acquired at the time at the auctions of Eberhard W. Kornfeld for his own collection, which is why there is now once again the opportunity to acquire exceptionally well-preserved and contemporarily coloured rarissima of German woodcut from the time of the Reformation wars.

Sheets of this kind represented an innovation at the beginning of the 16th century. Through them, portraits of rulers, ecclesiastical dignitaries, and later also leading figures of the Reformation were made accessible to a wider public for the first time. Distributed as broadsheets, they served as wall decoration as well as a mark of authority in official offices and were therefore subject to heavy wear. As a rule, they have survived in only a few copies, often even as unique examples.
