    Comments

In 1511, Dürer focused on publishing his woodcut series "Die grosse Passion", "Die Apokalypse", "Das Marienleben", and "Die kleine Holzschnitt Passion" in book form, which represented a considerable financial effort for him. In that year, only the "Kreuzigung" for the "Kupferstichpassion" and the present sheet were created as engravings.

Etched deeper than usual into the copper and therefore unusually high in contrast in the best impressions, Dürer shows Mary with the Christ Child in a landscape. The architecture in the background is reminiscent of buildings in northern Italy. Jesus looks at the viewer with a serious expression, already aware of the Passion, and blesses him. The pear that Mary has intended for Jesus, like the apple, is a Marian symbol.
