As one of the first artists, Dürer depicts the goddess Fortuna as a nude from behind, standing on a sphere. Her balancing act expresses the instability of fortune. Her long staff, on the other hand, gives her support. In addition, she holds a sprig of the plant sea holly (Eryngium), which makes the depiction of Fortuna, strictly speaking, a symbol of fluctuating luck in love.
