    Comments

A suite of the complete Passion series by Cranach, unique in this form, who, since 1505, served as court artist to the Saxon Elector Frederick the Wise in Wittenberg and especially in his first Wittenberg decade distinguished himself as a creator of graphic works. The Passion was conceived as a book. The edition of the book printed by Symphorion Reinhart in Wittenberg must have been very small, so that today only three copies are known (Berlin, Weimar, private collection). Alternatively, Cranach also distributed the Passion scenes as single-leaf prints. A first edition probably appeared simultaneously with the book edition. Shortly thereafter, a new edition as single-leaf prints followed. Even individual sheets from this now third overall edition are also rare and are consistently trimmed to the borderline. The present complete series is the only one in which the title line has been preserved above all fourteen scenes. Only several decades later did further reissues appear, at first again as single-leaf prints with decorative borders, and then, up to the end of the 16th century, as book illustrations in numerous works by the Wittenberg printers Georg Rhau and Johann Krafft.
