Impeccable impression, richly illuminated in contemporary hand and fresh in colours
A gathering from Ratdolt's missal for the Diocese of Constance ("Missale Constantiense", Augsburg: Erhard Ratdolt, October 1505). On the left, the canon leaf, which always precedes the Easter liturgy, with a depiction of the Crucifixion (the reverse, as always, blank). Burgkmair's woodcut was first used by Ratdolt in 1502 for the missal for the Diocese of Freising and is often described in the literature as his most beautiful canon leaf.
