    Comments

Birgit Prestøe (1898-1995) was probably the model for the three woodcuts 'Brigitte I', 'Brigitte II' and 'Brigitte III'. Munch also portrayed her several times at Ekely, see lots 993 and 994.

In 'Brigitte I' the young woman is seen in three-quarter profile. The lines are clear, the composition reduced. The image radiates stillness and alertness - a modern, almost detached image of a woman, observed rather than analysed in a psychological way. A hand-printed impression by the artist.
