Condition

Sheet slightly browned, with creases in the lower corners and at the margin, on the reverse with traces of old mounting. In good condition

Comments

In this powerful woodcut from 1917, Munch addresses power, isolation and existential finality. King Håkon and Skule from Ibsen's drama 'Die Kronprätendenten' are the protagonists; see also lot 995. The space appears empty, the moment final. Munch reduces the scene to expressive areas and stark contrasts. Probably printed by the artist himself in a small edition.

Blatt leicht im Papier gebräunt, unten in den Ecken und am Rand mit Knicken, rückseitig mit Montierungsresten. In guter Erhaltung

Erläuterungen

In diesem kraftvollen Holzschnitt von 1917 thematisiert Munch Macht, Isolation und existenzielle Endlichkeit. König Håkon und Skule aus Ibsens Drama "Die Kronprätendenten" sind die Protagonisten, vgl. auch Los 995. Der Raum wirkt leer, der Moment endgültig. Munch reduziert die Szene auf expressive Flächen und harte Kontraste. Wohl vom Künstler selbst in kleiner Auflage gedruckt.
