    Comments

The woodcut 'Liebespaar im Tannenwald' shows a young couple standing close together in a dark, densely wooded forest. The woman looks directly at the viewer. The tree trunks rise steeply and close together to form an enclosed space that envelops the couple like a living frame. The scene appears quiet, almost sacred, as if the couple were in an intimate sanctuary, far from the outside world.

Despite the romantic closeness of the figures, the mood is ambivalent. In this composition, Munch condenses his central themes: closeness and isolation, nature as a mirror of inner states, love as a space of disorientation and security; see also lot 820.

Technically, the work is an example of Munch's late, assured use of the woodcut technique. The strong contrast between the dark tree trunks and the lighter figures emphasises the couple's isolation in nature. The grain of the wood contributes to the visual effect, making the fir trees appear almost alive.

'Liebespaar im Tannenwald' is not an idyll. It is a quiet, ambiguous image about togetherness in a world that both protects and separates - a typical late work by Munch, rich in psychological depth and formal reduction.

An early impression made by the artist himself, the block - significantly - made of fir wood.
