    Comments

The woodcut 'Das Haus an der Küste I' shows a solitary house perched on a rocky outcrop above the sea. The motif appears simple, almost archetypal. Yet behind the apparent calm lies a deep emotional tension. The building seems to be both a refuge and a prison, symbolising seclusion and inner withdrawal. 'Das Haus an der Küste' can be read as a reflection of psychological isolation. Nature here serves not only as a backdrop, but as an expression of an inner state.

Technically, the woodcut demonstrates Munch's masterful command of the medium in the late phase of his printmaking work. He uses a highly reduced formal language with clear light-dark contrasts. The grain of the woodblock remains visible and underscores the atmosphere of the rugged coastal landscape.

This extremely rare sheet was printed by the artist himself.
