    Comments

The woodcut 'Kopf bei Kopf' shows a couple pressing cheek to cheek, almost merging into a single entity. The forms are soft and rounded, their outlines almost dissolving into the surface. Munch succeeds in distilling the emotional moment of this encounter with simple means.

Created during a time of great personal and artistic uncertainty, 'Kopf bei Kopf' marks Munch's turn to a reduced, introspective visual language. Technically, the woodcut impresses with its simplicity, the grain of the wood standing out clearly and powerfully emphasising the character of the woodcut. 'Kopf bei Kopf' is a meditative image about closeness, touch and the mystery of human connectedness.

Printed by M. W. Lassally in Berlin from a birchwood block.

An amicable agreement was reached with the heirs of Curt Glaser, represented by the Berlin law firm 'S+N Rechtsanwälte'.
