    Comments

The woodcut depicts the distinctive, angular face of a bearded elderly man in rigid frontality. Deep wrinkles, sunken cheeks, and an empty gaze emphasise transience and inner absence. Through his raw technique, Munch reduces the form to its essentials. The head becomes a symbol of ageing, not as a portrait, but as an exemplar, bearing the marks of life and carrying them with dignity.

Printed at Lassally in Berlin in only a few impressions.
