    Comments

The woodcut 'Frauenkopf' shows the highly simplified portrait of a woman in three-quarter profile. She appears absorbed, thoughtful, almost absent. Here, Munch deliberately dispensed with narrative or dramatic contexts. Instead, he focussed on expression - a moment of inner reflection, emotional tension or melancholy - which he accentuated with the woman in red and the background in black. 'Frauenkopf' is not an individual portrait, but an archetypal image of a woman. In its formal reduction and emotional concentration, the woodcut is exemplary of Munch's ability to render the invisible - thinking, feeling and doubting - visible.

A rare sheet, printed by Lassally in Berlin from an oak woodblock.
