Sheet slightly wavy, drawing pin holes in the lower corners, two small rubbed spots in the head of the man. Mounting board slightly stained, a spot of colour lower right, traces of old mounting on the reverse. In very good condition
The lithograph 'Asche II' is a powerful, symbolically condensed continuation of Edvard Munch's famous painting 'Asche' from 1895. As in the painting, the sheet shows a man and a woman after an emotionally charged, unspoken event. On the left, the woman stands with loose, flaming hair, her hands resting on her head. On the right, the man sits slumped, also with a hand on his head.
The scene is silent yet permeated by intense psychological tension. The title 'Asche' refers not only to the end of a passion, but also to emotional extinction. The woman is confrontational, while the man is turned away and inwardly broken. In the lithograph, Munch reduces the motif to clear light-dark contrasts. The woman's hair becomes the central graphic movement, while the background remains vague. With just a few lines and flat shading, Munch creates an almost archaic expressive power.
'Asche II' stands symbolically for separation after great closeness as well as for all that remains unspoken between man and woman.
An early impression by Petersen & Waitz, Kristiania (now Oslo). One of the fine impressions with the man's hand undamaged.

In sehr guter Erhaltung
