    Comments

The woodcut 'Frauen am Meeresufer' was created in 1898 in Kristiania (now Oslo). In his Norwegian studio, Munch experimented with sawn printing blocks, use of wood grain and hand colouring - methods that are impressively evident in this work as well. Particularly remarkable is that Munch subsequently enhanced this print by hand with coloured pencil. This gave the sheet a painterly quality and additional emotional depth.

The motif shows two female figures at the edge of the sea. A young woman in white with blonde hair and a seated woman in black. Through their posture, clothing and spatial arrangement, they not only represent two women, but also symbolise the transition from youth to old age. It is a motif that Munch varied several times, including in paintings and lithographs. The sea in the background is a recurring symbol in his work and here stands for time, transition and the unfathomable depth of life; see also lot 921.

Formally, the work is a typical example of Munch's woodcut technique around 1898. The printing block was sawn into several parts, which were inked separately in a monotype-like manner and then printed together like a puzzle. The structure of the wood remains deliberately visible in the print and lends the composition an almost tactile quality. Since a part of one printing plate had broken off (the headland next to the young woman's head), he subsequently coloured this area by hand with coloured pencil. The different colouring of the plates and the individual intervention with coloured pencil make each copy slightly different and emphasise the proximity to painting.

The sheet is a rare trial proof, printed by Lassally in Berlin. Munch noted at the lower right margin that he wanted to 'Mond und Spiegelung weknehmen' (erase moon and reflection). An important document that impressively demonstrates the artist's working process.
