    Comments

The woodcut 'Zum Walde I' is one of Edvard Munch's central works exploring the tension between landscape and inner psychological expression. In the foreground, a couple embrace closely as they walk into a dark forest; the path ahead of them is uncertain. The scene is simple, almost dreamlike in composition and emotionally charged. Walking into the forest becomes a symbol of an inner transition between consciousness and the unconscious, between life and death, between self and world. The forest in front of the figures does not appear threatening in the classical sense, but rather distant and symbolically charged; see also lot 959. The space does not open up, but contracts, the path seems to lead into the depths of the soul.

Munch created the woodcut during a phase in which he was intensely experimenting with new printmaking techniques. The composition is highly reduced, the areas clearly separated from each other. Munch deliberately used the grain of the woodblock as a pictorial element, so that the natural structure of the material corresponds with the depicted landscape. This 'artistic materiality' gives the sheet an immediate physical presence.

'Zum Walde I' is closely related to motifs such as anxiety, melancholy and separation, yet in its stillness and concentration the mood is somewhat meditative. It is an image of transition, a visual poem about farewell, loneliness and the search for a place beyond the visible.

Printed in only a few copies by Lassally in Berlin with one block of ash and one of oak.
