    Comments

In this lithograph, Munch portrays the French poet Stéphane Mallarmé with a fine line and psychological depth. The gaze is pensive, the face traversed by shadows - a picture of mental concentration and introverted energy. Munch emphasises less the outer likeness than the quiet presence of the poet of Symbolism. The portrait thus becomes a spiritual echo of Mallarmé and at the same time a homage to poetry as an inner experience.

    Printed by Lassally in Berlin.
