    Comments

The lithograph 'Loslösung II' was created in Paris in 1896, during Edvard Munch's pioneering engagement with the graphic arts in the international environment of the French printmaking studios. In this year, Munch worked closely with the renowned printer Auguste Clot and experimented with various techniques, including lithography, mezzotint and multi-colour woodcut. 'Loslösung II' is among the conceptually densest lithographs of this period and powerfully reflects one of his central themes: the emotional separation of two people.

The sheet shows two figures: a woman who turns her head to the right towards the sea, and a man who looks downwards, withdrawn. A branch grows above them. An invisible force seems to be at work. The moment of breaking, of the pain of separation, is for Munch not a loud, dramatic act, but a quiet, existential one. It is about the fading of a connection, the falling away of emotional closeness.

In 'Loslösung II', Munch makes great use of the formal possibilities of lithography. The composition is characterised by the contrast between light and dark, closeness and distance. In terms of content, the sheet clearly belongs to the cosmos of the Frieze of Life, in which Munch depicts central emotional experiences of modern humanity: it is about love, fear, loss and death. 'Loslösung II' is a kind of counterpart to 'Der Kuss'. Rather than depicting a moment of union, it shows separation; not an ecstatic moment, but a quiet rupture. And as so often with Munch, it remains unclear who is letting go and who is left behind.

A sheet of great rarity. Printed by Auguste Clot in Paris.
