    Comments

The lithograph 'Am Totenbett' is one of Edvard Munch's most impressive explorations of the themes of death and loss in printmaking. It depicts a group of five figures gathered around a deathbed. Their bodies are rigid, their faces mask-like. The person who has just died or is dying remains only suggested: two stylised faces float at the foot of the bed, which resembles a coffin. This lends the work an intense psychological tension and a powerful allure.

The scene is based on Munch's personal experience. The early deaths of his mother (1868) and his sister Sophie (1877) from tuberculosis had a lasting impact on him. Munch repeatedly took up this motif in numerous variations and techniques. The lithograph from 1896 is a particularly condensed and symbolically charged version. The figures are rendered in flat, stylised shapes. Munch dispenses with narrative details in favour of an existential statement. It is not the event that is central, but the feeling of helplessness, pain and isolation.

The lithograph deliberately uses the contrasts between darkness and light. The room is in twilight, the faces appear expressionless, almost ghostly. While some figures remain in reverent silence, the figure on the right looks directly and intensely at the viewer. Munch succeeds, with simple means, in creating a dense atmosphere of silence and inner rigidity. The atmosphere in the room seems to stand still. A sense of timelessness arises in the moment of farewell.

The sheet was printed by Auguste Clot in Paris in an edition of 30 copies.
